Erdal Akgün, Republican People’s Party’s Provincial Chairman of the Capital District of Edirne commented upon the process of Hamdi Sedefçi’s – the Mayor of Edirne – trial under arrest.
Stating that they are the guards of the secular Republic of Turkey, Akgün continued his remarks as follows:
”We sincerely believe that Hamdi Sedefçi, our Mayor of Edirne, shall be acquitted at the end of the trial process. We harshly condemn that certain circles have embarked upon a smear campaign – as if the allegations made against him are substantiated – without the declaration of the final verdict by the court. As a result of the political environment where both local officials and certain bureaucrats of the AKP rule acted not as the representatives of the state but of the government, Mayor Mr. Sedefçi was taken into custody and will be tried under arrest. We have full trust in all institutions of the secular Republic of Turkey and the fully independent judiciary.
At the end of the trial process, the political lynching campaign of the AKP will fade off like an electric bulb. We witnessed similar scenarios in the past. We have an honorable reputation and a unblemished past, and unlike others, never had a skin to cast off. Today we are the same as what we were before. We are Secular, Democratic, Modern, Enlightened and the dauntless guards of the principles and reforms of Atatürk.
It is needless to talk about what the city of Edirne attained during the Mayor Hamdi Sedefçi’s term of office. Edirne has witnessed a splendid boom with Mr. Sedefçi and rose up to the standards of European cities. By his third term of office, he achieved all what had not been done in the last 50 years for Edirne. We sincerely believe that he shall be released at the end of the trial process and will resume his post to accomplish the pending and future projects, which he will bring into the service of our people.
Standing up to all risks and difficulties, our Mayor Mr. Sedefçi has always been concerned with what more to achieve for our frontier city Edirne. We believe and trust in, and are always with our Mayor, who himself is devoted to Edirne and, regarding serving his people as a binding duty, managed to create new funds despite the attempts of the government which, instead of supporting its activities, brought in every case impediments before the Municipality of Edirne.
The AKP administration and the government should be aware of the following fact: In the municipal elections to be held next year, the people of Edirne shall strike a blow at the polls to this reactionary mentality, to those who ignore the existence of others who do not believe in the way they themselves believe, to those who argue that it is impossible to be secular and Muslim at the same time.” |
